Every summer, Guernsey Museum’s picturesque Candie Gardens welcome visitors wanting to embrace their inner nerd at the Big Geekend. Hosting an array of offbeat activities, talks and exhibits, there’s plenty for families to explore. If you’re staying at The Old Government House or Duke of Richmond and are culturally inclined, here’s the best of what to expect at the eclectic weekend for curious minds.

Joining Guernsey Museum’s impressive collection of objects and artworks relating to the island’s captivating history, will be a quirky selection of geeky items for the duration of the Big Geekend. These range from animé and Harry Potter to glass bottles, beer mats, coin collections and lace making. Set to be a hobbyist’s haven, the event is a prime opportunity to learn more about your favourite leisure pursuit or perhaps discover a new one.

Tech-lovers will also have the chance to get involved with 3D printing technology as well as find out more about the art of coding, while craft fans can have a hands-on experience by making replica props for film sets and tinkering with model train sets.

Geekend

There’ll be live folk music sound-tracking the Big Geekend, and you can even get physical at a line dancing or folk singing workshop, take part in a treasure hunt, or even don costume for a war game re-enactment. This year’s Nerdy Lecture will be on the popular Japanese game, Pokémon.

Guernsey is famous for its cream-bearing cattle, and two small heifers from a local conservation herd will be joining visitors in the gardens surrounding the museum. You can discover more about Guernsey’s beautiful nature with the Geeky Tree Tour.

“The idea behind the Big Geekend was to celebrate the breadth of hobbies and interests in our community,” explains event organiser, Josephine Dowding. “Museums have always been havens for geeks and we love to celebrate this. We have a mixture of locals and tourists who attend. I personally enjoy the live music element the most – that’s my particular area of geekery.”

Guernsey is a hub of art and cultural activities this summer, and the island’s spectacular programme of events is just one reason to visit, along with its exquisite beaches, wonderful walks and the freshest seafood.
