Secret swimming spots in Guernsey

Discover the island's most secluded and scenic swimming spots.

Guernsey is renowned for its wide, unspoilt beaches but the island also has plenty of secret swimming spots waiting to be explored. From secluded coves to tranquil tidal pools and Victorian swimming baths built into the coastline, Guernsey abounds with wild swimming options where you can relax, cool off and savour the stunning natural surroundings. Within easy reach of The Old Government House Hotel & Spa and The Duke of Richmond Hotel, here are Guernsey’s best secret swimming spots.

La Valette Bathing Pools

Found on the island’s east coast, the beautiful La Valette Bathing Pools have been a favourite with Guernsey locals since their construction over 150 years ago. This salt water pool is ingeniously designed to fill with sea water during high tide, while the walls retain enough water for a comfortable dip when the tide goes out. Complete with changing rooms, a kiosk serving light snacks and drinks, and incredible sea views, the venue has long attracted some of Guernsey’s most famous residents, including Victor Hugo and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Marble Bay

Guernsey’s east coast is full of secret swimming spots and the cove of Marble Bay is a fine example. Small, perfectly formed and utterly idyllic, the peaceful cove looks out at Herm and Sark island. It remains relatively quiet despite its proximity to Jerbourg Point. The walk down to the beach is a little steep but the crystalline water and tranquil atmosphere are certainly a just reward.

Venus Pool, Lihou Island

An island accessed by a causeway that’s only accessible at low tide for two weeks of the month, Lihou Island is certainly a special place. A haven for wildlife, Lihou is also home to the incredible Venus Pool, a natural rock pool. Plan your trip ahead to ensure that the causeway is clear enough to cross, and enjoy a gentle wallow in this picturesque natural bathing pool.

Port Grat

A closely kept local secret, Port Grat is a pretty horseshoe bay that’s ideal for a dip. Located near the Rousse Tower, the sandy beach is known for its excellent swimming at high tide and it’s generally blissfully deserted. Stretch your legs post-swim with a scenic stroll along the headland to Baie de Port Grat.
